Thong was the draftsman at 36 SCE (Singapore Combat Engineers) - also known as the BDU (Bomb Disposal Unit) or EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit. This is where I served my 2.5 years of national service. Thong joined Campus Crusade after national service and went and served in Hong Kong but during our time together there we encouraged each other over many coffee sessions.
National Service was an interesting part of growing up. As young 18 year olds, we were given a lot of responsibilities - handling live ammunition and explosive devices, responding to bomb threats in many public areas like US Embassy in Hill Street, Golden Million night club, Capitol cinema, disposing old grenades at Singapore Island Country Club, doing security searches in the old Parliament House, VIP lounges at airport ... leading a team of 2 Land Rovers with a group of men giving instructions to the police and other authorities who were much older than us.
It was also a time of making friend and building bonds with people from all walks of life ... from A level graduates to folks who did not pass PSLE. These friends move on to become lawyers, engineers, construction contractors, business men, insurance sales, commodity traders, stock brokers, rojak hawkers ... but always coming back together for reservist and re-bonding year after year!
